A very Merry Christmas to Nick and all Canalplan AC users.
Great piece of work Nick, we've used it for four years now and wouldn't be

Thanks also for the opportunity to upload photographs. We feel that this feature, together with the "Virtual Cruise", allows the site to give users a real feel for what's in store while planning or evaluating trips.
Keep up the good work!

Thank you so much for your canal trip planner. I wish I had discovered it 6 months ago when I started researching trips we are planning for next September. It contains an enormous amount of helpful detail, and clearly results from a huge input of time and effort. As almost-novice narrow-boaters we are very appreciative of your work.

Have you seen this ? Canal Calculator
Nick says: No, I hadn't. No-one has ever mentioned it, and I've never come across it when searching. Well, well!
The page (being white on grey) is a bit hard to read, but it looks as
though it does quite a lot - using similar internal workings - to
CanalplanAC.
It doesn't mention which OS it works on - so I'm guessing
Windows! I'll see about downloading it and having a
look. Thanks for letting me know about it.

testing prosses for the CD version yet?
Thank You for this brilliant piece of software!
Nick says: Yes. Three intrepid users are busy finding problems with it (all fixable, some requiring a fair amount of work).
I plan to put a "what's happening" page on the home page. When
I'm not wasting time keeping spammers out of the guestbook that is.
If you see anyone spamming here, find the site hosting their website
and complain. Loudly. Because the more work I have to do
kicking them out, the less Canalplan gets developed.

A terrific programme - absolutely invaluable for planning - and wonderful that it's shareware.
I've relied on it for years - it's always been spot on - and the default values work well on canal trips. I've found it a little pessimistic going up and down the (Thames) tideway - since one is travelling with the tide Canalplan's time estimate of 5 hours or so Teddington to Limehouse (or the reverse) is a bit pessimistic - 3 and a half to 4 hours is a good average. On the other hand the trip from Bow Locks (3 Mills) to Bow Creek (when perforce we were punching the incoming tide) took longer than expected. The only part of the journey I couldn't get Canalplan to compute was the cruise round past Greenwich and the Isle of Dogs from Bow Creek junction to Limehouse. Could you add this bit of the Tideway to your database? - and perhaps down to the Thames barrier?
Again thank you for your much appreciated and invaluable software.

Keep up the good work.
Nick says: I have a CD version that works at home! I'm planning to send test CDs to a handful of carefully selected testers over the next couple of weeks. After that (depending on what bugs they find) it will go on sale from this website - I'll put a big newsflash on the home page when it's ready.

very useful bit of kit comes in very handy when someone is trying to find you when they are in a car and lost well done ps is it poss to enlarge the maps ?
Nick says: To be honest, I don't think the maps are good enough to make them worth enlarging!
Serious work on the maps - including both appearance and other data -
is down as one of the big jobs that needs doing. But it is a big
piece of work, and not one that I'm particularly good at (graphic
design and layout is definitely one of my weaknesses) so it may be a
while before you see anything.

I have used Canalplan to help plan 3 trips now. On the Leeds & Liverpool, the South Oxford and the Grand Union (Warwick) and Stratford Canals. I will be planning another one shortly from Napton to the GU Leicester section and back. Really helpful in assessing the important things in life such as lunch! It would be brilliant if one could put in a "how far can I get in 3 hours" type question but for a free facility its indispensable when used in conjunction with Pearsons or Nicholsons. Thank you very much.
Nick says: Nick says: This ought to be possible, although a bit fiddly (start a new route;
put where you are in the start box; click "furthest place"; select 1
day at 3 hours per day; and that furthest place is one way only; and
off you go).
Unfortunately, it doesn't work for short times like three hours - it says "this is probably a bug", and it's right!
Short term I'll fix the bug so you can use the long-winded process
above. Longer term I'll add "where can I go in x hours" as part
of some bigger enhancements I've got planned and that it would fit in
well with.
[later...] This bug has now been fixed - furthest place had got broken when alternative routes where added.
